Even though Christmas isn’t here yet, we can all start to get into the holiday spirit with the help of some festive advertising.
One of the trends in adland this Christmas is “trying to keep away from the traditional end-of-year consumerism”, Google says. “Christmas is for giving, and the most popular ads are featuring [that].”
Google’s head of design, Patrick Collister, says it best: “What the YouTube Christmas leaderboard shows is that the brands that tug at our heartstrings are the brands which get us to open our wallets. We simply don’t want to be rational about Christmas.”
UPS – Your Wishes Delivered: Driver for a Day
During the holiday season, so many of the packages that are delivered begin with a wish. UPS is responsible for delivering millions of those packaged wishes during the holiday season.
With this in mind, UPS recently launched Your Wishes Delivered, a campaign designed to invite customers to share their wishes during the holidays. For every wish shared on ups.com/wishes or via social media channels like Twitter or Instagram using #WishesDelivered, UPS will donate $1 to one of three charities: The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots Literacy Program (up to $100,000).
Tesco – Lights On
Tesco set out to light up the holiday season for its customers, quite literally. Ray Shaughnessy, creative director at Wieden + Kennedy, the ad agency behind the campaign, said: “This year’s campaign is an important step change for Tesco. They are doing all sorts of unexpected things to help people have a brilliant Christmas. It won’t just be about them making sure you get the best turkey on the table; it will be about making sure that people feel Christmassy too.”
Tesco – The Wigan Light Show
Reflecting this year’s trend for social media-linked campaigns, this video was made in response to a tweet last year by shopper Claire Hannah, who had expressed disappointment about her local Tesco’s lackluster festive decorations. So this year, Tesco went all out.
John Lewis – #MontyThePenguin
This ad tells the story of a little boy, Sam, and his best friend, Monty the Penguin. It’s a tale of friendship, love, and giving someone the gift they’ve been dreaming of this season.
Boots – #SpecialBecause
Boots UK has invited the nation to celebrate all of the special people in their lives as part of its #SpecialBecause Christmas campaign. “This Christmas, we want to inspire our customers to celebrate the special people in their lives,” says Andy Ferguson, director of marketing at Boots, “not just by giving the perfect gift from Boots, but by sharing the reasons they matter for the whole nation to see.”
