ZBoard Gains Momentum in the Digital Space

Some of the Sochi boarding action just hit the VG headquarters. Our swanky, new, customized ZBoard just arrived, and we couldn’t be more excited. A weight-sensing electric skateboard that hits up to 20 mph, the ZBoard is the coolest new tech-cessory in town.

The idea for the product came to life while a couple of USC seniors were brainstorming for a senior project. Tired of hauling bikes and boards up LA’s hilly landscape, their goal was to “design a device that is faster and easier to ride than a skateboard, and more fun and portable than a bike”. The team developed and honed the idea over three years with input from 500 Start-Ups and Start-Up America. Their successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 and the recognition they have received from organizations like Smart Mobility and The Future is Now demonstrate the positive trajectory of the company.

Headquartered in Hermosa Beach, ZBoard embodies the California-cool vibe. Its use of innovative branding techniques, and more specifically its use of online video, has allowed the company to export what could have been a very localized fad, outside of just the boarding community and across the globe.

For a young company, ZBoard has demonstrated an incredibly astute and well-developed understanding of what it wants its brand and product to represent. Its explainer video, which was lauded as the best video pitch at Start-up America, is only a part of the company’s larger message. The ZBoard website and YouTube channel are host to a plethora of videos featuring engaging, consumer-generated content, special ZBoard events with companies like Google and its charitable collaboration with the Michael J. Fox foundation.
